All of Us Research Program to expand public engagement efforts with new partner awards

The All of Us Research Program, part of the National Institutes of Health, has awarded a combined $9.1 million in initial funding to two organizations to further the program鈥檚 extensive community engagement efforts. HCM Strategists, of Washington, D.C., and the University of Utah, Salt Lake City, will develop innovative approaches to educate communities and support enduring relationships with program participants.
鈥淢any communities have been left out of research in the past, and we want to change that,鈥 said Eric Dishman, director of the All of Us Research Program. 鈥淏eyond raising awareness, we want to gain participants鈥 trust and work together to speed up medical breakthroughs.鈥
HCM and the University of Utah will work alongside communities to develop engagement experiences that are scalable, customizable and available for use by the program鈥檚 national consortium.
HCM, one of the program鈥檚 initial awardees, will use the new funding to sustain the robust partner network it has established through the Community and Provider Gateway Initiative (CPGI). CPGI partners comprise a broad range of multicultural organizations and health care provider associations that support the All of Us mission by leading grassroots engagement activities across the country. These organizations will serve as an incubator for new engagement approaches and supply feedback to the program. Led by principal investigator Ronnie Tepp, HCM鈥檚 team includes the sub-awardees Montage Marketing Group of McLean, Virginia, and Clyde Group and Venn Strategies, both of Washington, D.C.
The University of Utah, new to the All of Us consortium, brings significant expertise in experiential learning. Under the leadership of principal investigator Louisa Stark, Ph.D., the University鈥檚 Genetic Science Learning Center will use community-based participatory design techniques to develop and evaluate culturally sensitive engagement experiences. In addition, the team will share insights on digital engagement and provider engagement strategies. The University of Utah team has been recognized for award-winning creative approaches in the field of genetics engagement and developed the widely used life science education websites and . Collaborators on this award include the University鈥檚 Utah Center for Clinical and Translational Science; the Therapeutic Games and Apps Lab, part of the Entertainment Arts and Engineering Program; Community Faces of Utah, a community health partnership; and the nonprofit organization Equality Utah鈥攁ll of Salt Lake City.
鈥淭hese awardees bring tremendous knowledge and a proven track record in community engagement, which will be critical in the program鈥檚 work to foster ongoing conversations with the public and build authentic relationships over time,鈥 said Dara Richardson-Heron, M.D., chief engagement officer of the All of Us Research Program. 鈥淥ur ultimate goal is a shared one鈥攖o improve health of all communities for the benefit of all people.鈥
All of Us is a landmark project that aims to enroll 1 million U.S. volunteers from all backgrounds to help create one of the world鈥檚 largest and most comprehensive biomedical research platforms. Participants will contribute different types of information over many years, through surveys, electronic health records, physical measurements, biosamples and wearable technologies. Information will be stored in a secure system, with safeguards in place to protect privacy, and made accessible to researchers for thousands of health studies. Their discoveries may lead to more personalized treatments and prevention strategies, what is known as precision medicine.
The program鈥檚 engagement activities to date have been substantial, contributing to early enrollment successes. More than 248,000 participants have joined so far, including more than 189,000 who have completed all the initial steps of the program. Of those, more than 80% come from communities that are historically underrepresented in research鈥攔acial and ethnic minorities, sexual and gender minorities, residents of rural areas, and other groups. Participants are involved in the program鈥檚 central governance and in local advisory groups of partner institutions nationwide.
HCM and the University of Utah are supported by 51视频 award numbers 1OT2OD028404-01 and 1OT2OD028414-01. To learn more about All of Us, visit .
